Next-Gen Regeneration: Stockport Exchange

Stockport’s recent rise has been nothing short of meteoric, leaving its mill-town status in the dust. Behind the scenes, there’s been a quiet engineering one of the North’s most impressive urban comebacks, and the next phase is right on track. Stockport Exchange is the town’s £145 million answer to stale office parks, redefining what a connected, mixed-use district can look like. From Brik’s point of view, it’s the front door to a very new Stockport, right by the station.

The BRIK-Down

Developed by Muse and Stockport Council, Stockport Exchange is a pivotal piece in the area’s £1 billion regeneration mission, carrying jobs, sustainability, and urban ambition on its shoulders. Positioned as a place for people and business, the site blends Grade A workspaces with retail, hospitality and transport access in a way that feels more continental than commuter belt. Over a decade in the making, the project shows what can be created when local ambition meets proper funding and a robust masterplan.

We see it as a benchmark of regeneration, showing how important it is to put the right pieces together in the right order.

The Story So Far

Stockport Exchange has already completed its first four stages successfully, and been awarded Planning Scheme of the Year in the process.

2014: Masterplan gets green light.
Phase One: 1 Stockport Exchange opens, fully let in its first 6 months.
Phase Two: 2 Stockport Exchange brings five more floors of contemporary office space.
Phase Three: A 1000-space NCP multi-storey car park answers the logistical question before anyone asks it.
Phase Four: 3 Stockport Exchange completes. 64,000 sq ft of stunning workspace, plus roof terrace.

What’s Next?

Phase five is where things start scaling up. We can expect a 60,000 sq ft office building with a ground floor made for footfall, featuring cafés, bars, and all designed to meet the highest environmental standards. We’re also excited to see the unveiling of a landscaped square, open to the public and creating a picturesque path to the station. Phases six to eight are set to go even further, bringing 185,000 sq ft of new offices, 100 residential units, ground-floor commercial space and beautiful pedestrian networks.

Game. Set. Padel.

Naturally, there’s a lot of local and national anticipation around the scheme. At Brik, the element we’re most excited to see realised is the planned padel courts. Upholding its ‘not another business park’ approach, Stockport Exchange is creating a social destination for the sport, and its fans within the development, sure to attract workers, residents and a few visitors from within our own team.

Our Take

As a new business district, Stockport Exchange already feels less like a business park and more “urban neighbourhood”. It’s walkable, well-located and well-considered. We see it as a benchmark of regeneration, showing how important it is to put the right pieces together in the right order.
